you're the strangest
person I ever met,
she said & I said you too

& we decided we'd
know each other
a long time.

just a section of a story i wrote, read if you're bored or something.

She scuttled down stairs. I shifted myself on the bed so that I was sitting with my legs crossed Indian-style. The door shut and I could hear a pair of voices and footsteps. I uncrossed my legs quickly, grabbed a pillow and set it over my stomach. The voices echoed through the halls.
“You look great, Mackenzie. Whatever you’ve been doing keep it up,” a male voice said.
“Always the ladies’ man, Damon. You haven’t changed at all.” They stepped into the bedroom. Damon’s arm was wrapped loosely around Mackenzie’s waist. He then glanced at me and quickly unlocked his arms from around her. I straightened up a little and pretended like I didn’t know who he was.
“Damon, this is my friend Lori.” In the picture she showed me of him, his hair was shaggier and his style was more laidback. He had neatly cut blonde hair now. Not a single strand hung below the curves of his ears. His blue eyes harmonized with his sapphire polo shirt that fit loosely on his torso. A belt wrapped around his jeans, hugging the sharp V’s of his abdomen. His chiseled jaw line strained as he smiled. He offered his hand.
“Hey, Lori,” he said. I returned the handshake.
“Hi,” I said. He slid into a swivel chair and rolled towards me.
“So, what school do you go to, Lori?”
“Um, I go to Kennedy, well I’ll be there until next year.”
“Really? I went there too. How come I never saw you around when I went there?”
“I, um, I’m not sure.”
“Lori transferred to Kennedy after you left I think. Plus, Kennedy is so overpopulated even if you guys were at the school at the same time, you wouldn’t see each other. I didn’t meet Lori until this semester through soccer,” Mackenzie said.
“Oh, alright that makes sense. So what are we doing tonight?”
Well, tomorrow is Lori’s birthday so…” Lori started
“Mackenzie!” I interrupted, “what does that have to do with anything? It’s just a day and it means I’m just a little older than I was. There’s nothing significant about it.” Damon gave me a sly smile.
“What are you talking about? Now tonight has been granted some purpose. We can take the car out and go wherever you want. There might be a couple of parties in Santa Monica tonight,” he said.
“That would be fine, but I can’t take the car because my brother took it after we got home. And Lori doesn’t drive,” Mackenzie said.
“No worries, I’ll just drive then,” Damon said. There was a slow pause. Mackenzie shifted uncomfortably.
“Are you sure, Damon? I mean, you driving…it’s probably not a good idea. I don’t know…” she trailed off. He glanced at me quickly and then shot an annoyed look at Mackenzie.
“It’s been a year and a half since,” he muttered.
“It feels like it just happened though-Jim and Alex, I feel like they’re just away or something…not actually gone…” His face turned grave.
“We’ll it didn’t just happen and I’ve changed a lot since then. It was just a freak accident.”
“You’re acting like it was no big deal-just something that happens everyday,” Mackenzie said. Her voice quivered.
“Listen, I know. Believe me I would know. It changed everything. I really don’t want to talk about it right now. I did enough of that with my parents, the police, the judge-” He paused and then his face lightened. “Anyway, today…tomorrow is someone’s birthday. Let’s not kill the mood.” Mackenzie seemed to loosen up a little.
“Yeah, I guess. That’s true, it is her birthday. We can cruise the PCH until everything closes. Are you good, Lori? Want to go? But we don’t have to if you don’t want to…” Mackenzie said with a weak smile. I wanted to go. Mackenzie began cracking her knuckles, a nervous habit of hers. She did it when she thought Randall was cheating on her and when her parents had found out that she threw a party at their house while they were away. She really did not want to go for some reason. I couldn’t agree to go now. I opened my mouth to reject the offer but Damon interrupted.
“Yeah, we’ll go to the Pier or Disneyland or Rome…whatever you want. The top is down on my car and it’s a hot night. I’ll even let you sit up front with me, Lori.” He winked at me. My cheeks felt hot, so I avoided his gaze and looked at Mackenzie. Her mind seemed to be elsewhere.
“Mackenzie? You there?” I asked. She snapped out of her trance.
“Let’s go,” she said bluntly.
“Sweet. I knew you’d come around.” He wrapped each arm around our shoulders as we walked through the hall and then down the stairs. Once we got out of the door, Mackenzie walked ahead of us and climbed into the backseat.
“Mackenzie, you take shot gun, “ I called to her.
“No, thanks,” she said as she clipped on her seatbelt quickly.
“Easy girl, usually the driver gets in the car before the fasten seat belt signs come on,” Damon said with a laugh.
“You never know,” she muttered under breath. Damon seemed distracted with the change in his pocket, so I hopped over the side of the black convertible. The seats were hot. The air breathed heat. My skin stuck to the leather seat so I shifted and pulled my skirt down. I felt his gaze from the corner of my eye.
“You’re really cute, you know,” he said. I smiled, but I didn’t blush this time. He started the car and we peeled out of the driveway heading for nowhere in particular.
