basically people taking a vote on whether or not they think someone is qualified/competent to do the job they're supposed to do. Doesn't result in anything binding in and of itself, but a vote of "no confidence" can spark other measures to remove them/remedy the situation.

Sarah basically answered, but I'll add. The way we used it in BBYO was if an officer wasn't doing their job, wasn't coming to meetings, couldn't be trusted, and a lot of people had "no confidence" in their abilities, you could hold a vote of no confidence, and basically vote them out of office. We never used it when I was in BBYO, but it has been used before.

okay, makes sense. i think Canada just did that, or is talking about doing it? it would work out better if i understood parliamentary government, heh.

it's a parliamentary thing. it's basically an impeachment, only since in parliamentary systems they elect parties instead of people, it would theoretically just result in a switching of head of government, instead of a whole new election.

meaning the same party stays in power, but with a new guy in charge?

pretty much, yeah. it's a far more common process than impeachment since it's not a total overhaul.

makes sense. does there have to be a specific offence (as with impeachment), or just a general "you suck at this"?

professional way of saying "you suck, get out of here"

oh parlimentary procedure, what fun you are! We had to learn all about it at leadership camp for BBYO. I guess it will stay with me forever. . . good to know I learned something practical :)
