so my RA called the head resident staff person in charge of Bice (the building where i live), to tell her we need a new/recharged fire extinguisher after friday's little adventure. her response

yeah, i've heard that, it kindof made sense in high school, when we weren't technically adults, but now it's just stupid (especially if you're certified in fire extinguisher use anyway. which, btw, seems useful, is there anything more to it than just "stand far enough away you won't get burned and aim at the base of the flames"?)

Also, I don't know how hot it got in the oven due to the fire, but you might want to get it inspected before you use it again. the heat might have damaged something. (I dunno if that came up in talking to the staff person in Bice or not).

a) the fire extinguishers are in our suite. no one comes in our suite but us. if we can't use them, why are they there?
b) there was discussion of how to pick the right kind, what the different classes are designed to do, dry chem vs foam vs etc.
c) we're not touching the oven til someone comes and deals with it. we haven't even cleaned the chemicals out of it. not my problem.

So if you have a fire extinguisher, but you're told not to use this, how is this fulfilling any regulation?
It's like being given a gun and a whistle, and told that if you're pinned down, use the whistle. You could hurt somebody with that gun.

This made me laugh. Society is full of these contradictions, particularly in college. Yay state institutions.

yea, exactly. and i'll take a slap on the wrist over a burnt up apartment just about any day of the week.
