So I've been working at this part time tech job. I'm billing at about a pretty good rate, so it's been enough to life comfortably and still have enough time for everything I want to do. I'm pretty good at what I do, so they are pretty happy. I get things done, I take responsibility for what I do, I work really fast, and I make sure my code is ( Read more... )

This does sound like quite the business oppurtunity, although it might very well end up taking up a huge chunk of time.

Wow, I totally understand where you're coming from. You're position sounds like a good one, and part time work is nice. Having time is nice.

Maybe the way to approach this is to try and imagine the best possible way this could work out. Ask yourself what you like from your current position and what you think you would like about full time, then combine those. It sounds like the health care and 401k and such would be nice. Are you afraid that going full time would cause you to have to work tech industry hours and you would get burned out again? If so, then can you ask for a cap on the hours, maybe even a cap at the same number of hours you work now.

I'm currently going through some pretty serious soul searching in my life as a result of getting bruned out at work and other things. One thing I'm seeing over and over is that I can only be happy if I imagine what I want and then ask for it and try to get it even if it seems implausible or atypical.

If you don't go full time, will they drop you as a contractor?

By the way, when I say "You're position sounds like a good one" I actually mean "Your current job sounds like a good one" ;-)
