Sokka walked down the hallway with Toph, his hand on her arm. The looks he was getting sort of bothered him, but he hadn't seen anyone else there that looked like them, so he assumed they looked out of place. He sure felt out of place.
"You okay, Toph?" He asked her, inwardly wondering if she felt as awkward as he did. The uniform didn't help much; it was itchy and probably polyester.
---

"I have to wear this thing around my neck. It is not comfortable. " Toph had her hair shoulder cut now. it was more comfortable. THe back back was disturbing her.
"I have books in there. Ones I have to touch." She was disgusted. "Anyway are you feeling okay?"
---

Valor Overdrive [4:56 P.M.]: "I'm alright," Sokka replied, laughing gently at her look of disgust.

" You really don't like those books, do you?"
---

"It is easy just for me to listen. not sure why they waste the time on these.
Having an apartment is weird as well. I thought we were nomadic."
---
"I'm still trying to figure out how to use the... light switches?" He didn't know if he was pronouncing it right. "And the refrigerator, too."
---
"I can see just fine." Toph joked. "The refrigerator is
probably the best invention in history. Preserving food and stuff." She was happy they had the same homeroom. That the school had not seperated them.
---

Sokka would have 'flipped shit' (as he heard someone in the hall say) if they had.

"Yeah, I know you can see in the dark." He laughed lightly. "You're lucky. But that preserving food thing is nice. In the South Pole we would just bury and dry things. "

"Natural refrigerators, wonder if that was where they got the idea."

A teacher was going by.
---

"That is not far off, preservation of food was a major problem in warm climates. So finding ways to freeze a area to store was an major achievement."

"Then floods could ruin whole supplies." she added.
---
"Oh," Sokka replied, quietly. "I never knew that."

He really missed home. As cool as everything here was, he missed the simplicity of the Water Tribe.

She took his hand a moment. "We are here and we got alot to figure out."

Sheriru walked up. Remembering them barely. Her memory was pretty badly fried. After the apocalapse all had changed.

"Sokka , Toph ...."
---
Sokka squeezed Toph's hand in his own, caringly.

He recognized the girl in front of him but a name wasn't coming to him. His memory wasn't the best, and the "apocalapse" certainly didn't help.

"Oh, hey there."
---

"Apocolapse " Sheriru was not remembering it either..

Toph could make her out by seeing with her feet.

"Hoa, maybe."

"It's Sheriru , welcome to the homeroom. The view is awful of the outside world. The chairs are uncomfortable."

"Oh I think the view is great." Toph joked.

"No Toph," Sokka joked back, "It's really really bad."

"Thanks Sheriru," Sokka nodded back at her.
---

"Try not to get suckered into joining a team. this town is all about it's sports at times." Sheriru cautioned. Familiar yes. But she kept drawing blanks on details.
---

"Sports?" Sokka asked. He didn't know what she was talking about.

"Yeah like basketball, baseball is the big thing. where guys get to smack projectile objects with sticks." That was a great explanation.

"Oh," Sokka replied. It sounded odd. At the same time, he couldn't see himself getting asked to participate in any such thing. People were giving him really odd looks.

"That reminds me Meison, you have no extra curricular activities." A stern looking man came in.
"Perhaps you have a lot of leisure time. I believe softball is having an opening."
"Sorry afraid of sticks and balls." This was followed by laughter from a few around the room.
---
Toph tried to find her seat. Tapping the poular girls to annoy them on the way. They looked like they wanted to say watch out. Yet telling that to a blind girl.

Toph could pick up the intensity.
---
"Huh," Sokka said idly, "in the Earth nation I didn't even notice anything for storage. I thought they just always killed stuff when they wanted to eat it." That's what he had done for the most part when they were there. It made the most sense to him.

"Old history, interesting." Teacher wandered off.
---

Sokka nearly snorted but kept his laughter to himself and put his hands on Toph's shoulders to lead her to her seat.

"There ya go, Toph."
"Thanks ." She pulled Sokkas desk a bit closer.

Miss nails was watching annoyed. Fake press ons . This set had fake gems on it.

Sheriru was looking at them.

"Are those comfortable?"

"What you mean, better then you got anyway."

"I thought they were tackier then your last set."

Tap on the board time to pay attention.

Sokka snickered to himself, leaning over to Toph.

"Well, this should at least be entertaining."

"Except when we get pop quized."

"It is time to discuss poetry. I am not a substitute teacher. I am in fact a replacemecement. Miss Sumiko is missing. I am Mr Furu. " He wrote his name.
---

And of course, Sokka couldn't read it.

The grin quickly faded from his face. Oh, crap! He couldn't read or write in this language!

Toph could not read it either. That was to be expected.

Sheriru looked over at Sokka.

"I'll help you." she was friendly.
---

Sokka looked over at her with a weary grin and whispered a thanks.
It never occured to him how he could speak to people but not write or read.

Class ending was a relief. The prior teacher was missing.
Sheriru was not exactly thrilled with that. "Lets get lunch." She stated. grabbing her bag.

Miss nails tried to dodge the chain. No such luck. It was a useful bothering tool. Toph was amused by it.

"A student vanished last week. been all over the papers." She stated.
---

"People are going missing, huh?" Sokka asked, aknowledgingly, and looked at Toph, amused by her bothering of the "popular" girls.

"People are talking about a website. Some got hooked on it and they never came back. Rumors maybe who knows."

Sheriru headed for the roof.

Toph was pesky at times. "Oh so that is the rumor on the website."
