I think that... if you know the person very well, then he knows you just as well.
Which means... you can say whatever it is you need to say to him in any way or form, and he'll still understand. Just talk to him...

Well first I made sure that he really DOES feel that way, then I tried to hint at the fact that I wasn't interested. Then a curse happened where we were married or something, and after that I told him "Don't ever expect that to happen again."
