Transnistria has just urged the world to recognize its independence. It is their reaction to Moldova's application to join the EU. They have asked Moldova to start the negotiations to finalize the divorce peacefully and go their own ways ( Read more... )

If Moldova says no, Putin will have his flimsy pretext to invade.

He will not invade Moldova I think, he will just recognize Transnistria and possibly annex (deff will annex it de-facto). The people who were born and live there do not want to be with Moldova (after a brief encounter with Romanian nationalism after Moldova became independent) and have been living in limbo for over a quarter of a century. Moldova does not have control over Transnistria now and it will have to invade it to prevent them from leaving. Moldova's army is a joke (it is not Ukraine) and the Russians have a "peace keeping" base there.

Wanting to be part of Russia right at the moment certainly does suggest a powerful motivation.

I thought of you when I saw that Moldova had applied for entry to the EU. Do you think that will help with some of the issues you've mentioned about Moldova being stuck futureless in limbo? Assuming of course that things calm down again, which I can only hope...
