God save the king!

This coronation reality show is not nearly as good as the US presidential election, and it is not even close. The costumes are more elaborate, but there is no suspense and the drama is a couple of notches down. This to US election is what a quaint well-known British soap rerun on channel 4 is to a world premier of a huge universally anticipated ( Read more... )

Yep, the King has been crowned. I missed the actual crown being bestowed. It was a really rough week and I just forgot. But, I did see them come out onto the balcony. What I noticed ... they looked old, they looked exhausted, and they looked uncomfortable. I remember an interview with Queen Elisabeth where she talked about how heavy the crown was and how uncomfortable she was when wearing it. I figure they were afraid to move too quickly for fear the crowns would fall. I can imagine the horror and disbelief if that were to happen. Also the laughter in some crowds. Plus there would probably not be any other pictures of the coronation shown except for the falling off of the crowns. I'm sure it would have also been unseemly to hold them in place.

The fact of the matter is, no matter what you think of the King, the monarchy, or the coronation ... this was history and I was glad I got to see, at least, some of it.

My thought when watching all the long robes, props, chairs, steps, words, swords, musicians, goblets with liquid, horses, small children for FOUR hours; was that whomever came up with this a thousand years ago had zero clue it would one day need to be done live to hundreds of millions. It's like the theatrical play from hell, that has to be broadcast across the globe.

That everyone got through it without screwing any of it up, is a minor miracle.

That was impressive but also disappointing, you need a well-rehearsed staged screw-up to go viral.

Ha! I didn't even watch this. It aired live here at around 4am I was in bed sleeping. I guess you could say I slept through it. Feel free to make fun of it. I'm not a fan of old Charlie.

I do not care about Charles much, it is just that European monarchs are pointless and just theatre now.

My Irish genes couldn't cope with watching it all. Neither, I suspect, could much of my English genetics. Rest of my fam except my brother, watched it and thought it a great hilarity. My brother said he really didn't have time to watch Mr and Mrs Windsor get all dressed up for some party or other, that he had a life to live.

A First Aussie friend loved how so much pagan symbolism was involved. Though I suspect they watched it mostly coz their fave colour is purple.

I'm a bit with you.

So did I understand this right? You're not very monarchy-supporting mother in law is now totally into it? or the opposite?

(Fun fact, it turns out I'm also British, not just Aussie. When I realised this I was quite horrified - forget parliamentary crisis. I had a crisis of Identity!!!! I thought long and hard about throwing in my british citizenship officially. But then life moved on and I forgot about it till just now lol)

Private Eye summed it up best: "Man in hat sits on chair".
