Wufan enters the practice room, almost banging the door in haste, panting heavily as his eyes searches for a familiar figure. The room is almost empty, except for the sound system and a few cd’s left cluttered on the tables and on the racks. He heaves a sigh of relief when he finally finds what he was looking for: a young lad sitting on the polished floor, his chin resting on his knees, his back stooping low against the wall decorated with laminated posters of clouds amidst the blue background.
He runs a hand through his own hair, and shuffles his feet, walking closer to the young lad until he is beside him. He slumps onto the spot beside the other boy, who seems undisturbed with his presence.
They sit in silence for a long while. Wufan watches the other’s reflection in the mirror; the latter is staring on the floor between the mirrored walls and his feet; apparently lost in his deep thoughts.
Wufan knows that in situations like this, all he has to do is stay by the young lad’s side, and wait for him to open up. Long silences don’t bother him at all. In fact, he has grown used to it. He finds it endearing, actually. That way, he could fervently look at the other’s face as the latter is apparently busy with his own conflicting thoughts.
He loves how this kind of silence gives him a chance to become closer to the young lad. He feels that by waiting, he gains the other boy’s fragile trust. And he loves how the young lad can know of his presence without even directly looking up at him.
They remain that way for a few minutes. Wufan studies the other boy’s features quietly through the mirror in front of them, while the other boy continues to stare into the space between his own shoes and the floor.
Ten or maybe fifteen minutes have passed and then, finally, the young lad breaks the silence.
“Hyung, do you think I could do it?” he asks, not even shifting to face Wufan; his eyes remaining fixed on the space he was staring at.
“Honestly? No,” Wufan answers him. The other boy finally lifts his head in reflex, and eventually looks at him, giving him an expression that resembles a beaten puppy.
Wufan chuckles at his expression. He pulls the younger boy towards him, sweeping his hand over the latter’s back, before resting it on his shoulders. He directs the younger lad to look at their reflection in the mirrors in front of them.
“But I do believe that you can always prove me wrong, Junmyeon-ah,” Wufan tells him, giving him a smile that emits an aura of firm assurance.
Junmyeon’s eyes widen at the sudden statement. He feels Wufan’s smile sending warmth to a certain location in his chest. It’s the kind of warmth by the fireplace on a cold winter night, snug and comfortable.
Junmyeon realizes that Wufan is like a candle in a dark room. The dark room represents his life. And Wufan brings both brightness and warmth into it.
He finds himself becoming lighter, like a heavy weight has been lifted off his chest. He slowly takes a breath before feeling the corner of his lips tugging up. And Wufan looks back at him cheerfully through the mirror.
“And you don’t have to handle everything by yourself, Junmyeon-ah. You will always have me.”
