What we have here, is a failure to communicate.

So at about 0900 this morning I started hearing a beep from the living room. It would occur every few seconds. I went to see what was going on and saw a small alert lit on the security system panel. Punching up the diagnostics told me "lack of telco."

I picked up the phone: no dial tone.

Hmm...DSL is still working.

Plugged a phone into the jack that the DSL is using...still no dial tone.

Used my mobile to call Verizon support: "We recommend that you disconnect everything for a moment and plug it back in." Okay, fine. DSL modem powered down and disconnected. Phone unplugged. Phone plugged back in: still no dial tone. DSL still works, though. "How about checking the Network Interface Device on the side of the house?" Well I hadn't bothered with that as the DSL still works so I know that my internal wiring is still good. "I've run a test on the line and I am seeing a problem that does appear to be outside the house. I'll schedule a technician, but due to the holidays they're already rather booked. The earliest I can schedule is 31 Dec."

Umm...we're moving on 29 Dec.

"Someone might be able to see to it earlier."

Fine...put me down for 31 Dec.

Bottom line is, our phone doesn't work. If you call our house number, it will go directly to voice mail. If you just need to leave some information for us, that's fine. If you need to actually talk to us at the moment you're calling, call one of our mobiles.
