The Left side is how Ianto's life could have turned out. The church-obsessed, Ready Meal eating, call center working, old car driving Ianto. Instead he got Torchwood and Jack and everything with it (on the right side). His new life brings him more pain than the old one would but that is what you have to endure to keep your life changing. He will never forget what his old life could have been.
