Well, it's that day again. Ironically, it's the first time anyone in Torchwood has ever even acknowledged it. My birthday, that is. Gwen was predictably overenthusiastic about it, but even Jack had something planned. I believe I have someone on the community to thank for that, but I don't know who. Thank you, mystery person. We actually got to sit ( Read more... )

...I take it that you are the one to thank, then, ma'am? For my night out? Lord knows Jack never would have thought anything like that up all by himself.

Among others. There were a few people with suggestions. I was happy to help. Everyone deserves a happy birthday.

Well, then. Thank you. Really. It was lovely, if a bit embarrassing at first.

I don't believe we've ever spoken before, ma'am. As you know, I'm Ianto Jones. It's a pleasure to meet you.

Happy birthday, Ianto. I, um, put something on your desk for you.

Ianto raised an eyebrow at the package he found sitting on his desk. It was a box, wrapped in generic striped wrapping paper, though roughly, as if the person who'd wrapped it was not used to doing such fine arts as wrapping gifts. He raised an eyebrow at it, then something clicked. Akihiko'd mentioned in reply to his latest entry that he'd put something on Ianto's desk. Maybe this was it?

Ianto picked the gift up, and then turned to look at Akihiko, who was sitting at a nearby computer station idly clicking through something, though Ianto wasn't quite sure what.

"Ehm, is this from you?" Ianto asked, a bit awkwardly. He wasn't used to getting gifts; not any more, not since he'd graduated from university five years ago.

Akihiko started a little and turned guiltily away from the computer. He nodded, smiling sheepishly.

"It's a really not very good, but I hope you like it," he said, a bit formally. At least, it would have come across that way in his native Japanese. Translated into English, it probably sounded overly humble.

"Right," Ianto said, not questioning the awkward way Akihiko responded to him. He looked at the box, trying to figure out what to do with it. What was the custom for things like this? Gwen had given him a gift, that was true, but she'd forced it onto him and then goaded him into opening it with such force that Ianto'd had no choice but to comply.

This was different though. It was a gift from Akihiko, someone who he suspected had as much experience with such things as Ianto did himself. "I, er, should I open it now, or wait, then?" Ianto asked him, eying the closed door to Jack's office. At least Jack was busy--he could only imagine how much more awkward this would be with Jack there.

Awesome.

Isn't it just? She probably spent way too much on it, unless she somehow found it second hand, but I like it too much to complain. I mean, it froths the milk... No more little whisks for me.

Well, my offer still stands. If you'd ever like to pop by for a cuppa (and to meet me an Jack, for that matter), I'd be happy to oblige. I do make some damned good coffee, if I do say so myself.

Thank you sir. You know, though, I suspect that you had some part in this as well, so I suppose I should be thanking you as well.

Ah. Well. Bit of advice, is all.

Well. It must've been some pretty good advice, then.

Thank you, Kasumi. And you're right, the machine's fantastic. Fairly easy to use, too. This certainly was one of the best birthdays I've had in a while.

You're welcome. Oh, I'm glad, though it looks a bit complex to me. It was a wonderful day, sir?

Please, Ianto's fine, Kasumi. Calling me sir is just... I mean, I spend most of my time using honorifics for other people, to hear it addressing me is just too much.

And yes, it was a good day. Plus, the machine really isn't that complicated. For coffee, literally you turn it on then press a button and voila! It grinds, brews, and pours your coffee for you. Brilliant, it is.
