NCECA!
It's been long enough since I got back from this that I really *should* probably post the pics and stuff. Somehow I was just too busy with everything else and this was the least important thing on my list. And I have enough pics that I'll just lj-cut for everyone's sanity.
I went with my boss (Mike Taylor), Michael Kifer, Brian Beam and Scott. Mike got us into this kickass hotel that I really should've taken more pictures of because there was art EVERYWHERE. It was the Museum Hotel in Louisville, KY, just a few blocks from the NCECA convention center. And when I say there was art everywhere, I mean even the bathrooms were cool. They had video installations in the mirrors, the men's room had a one way mirror urinal with water running down the wall as a 'flush', there was a video installation at the elevators that you could interact with, and just lots of sculpture in the lobby. And some sleeping people in the middle of the floor. AND these red plastic penguins all over the hotel. Apparently they were migratory, they kept moving around. We kidnapped one for a night. There will be pictures below.
We got to the convention center just early enough to catch the keynote speaker, who happened to be Bob Edwards. I grew up listening to his voice on NPR! Somehow, I think I got a lot more out of listening to him now than I did when I was 5. Anyway, that was the first night.
Did I mention how pretty the hotel was? Well, the rooms were pretty too. They were loaded with even more art, and they even programed an iPod for us! We had a rubber duckie in the shower, art posters above the beds that were filled with an insane amount of pillows, oh, and the big screen plasma tv opened with a video installation of a boat turning over and over in the ocean. Very cool.
Second day we did some vendors area, I got more stuff for other people than I did myself (I got a sweet shirt that says 'flue hole' on it). We watched a few hours of the demonstrations, and then tried in the evening to get to some of the galleries, but apparently everything closed by 5 pm and the only things left open were on the other side of town. By the time we figured that out, it was too late to catch a bus and none of us wanted to pay cab fare. So we went drinking and captured a penguin instead!
Third day we got to the galleries. And the gallery receptions! Things still closed early, but we got a lot in. I wish I had taken pictures of more of the things there, specifically in the Bourbon Bottle Show, but I didn't. I remember what I wanted to remember, but now that it's past, it would've been nice to have pictures of some things. The Bourbon Bottle Show was about the only one I really wanted to buy anything from, but everything that I could've afforded had already been snatched up. Strangely, I really liked the things in my price range the best. I suppose I could've gotten something for a couple hundred dollars, but they just didn't appeal to me as much. The other galleries we hit that night were mostly student and instructor-type galleries, some of which held some really cool stuff.
Third day we just got up and went home. That was it, no more. Next year, PA.
Overstuffed and comfy bed. It was even *made* pretty!
Poster art above the bed! Hot DAMN that was nice.
The Penguin Kidnapping begins. Here's Mike and Brian in the elevator with him!
Pengie sleeping in Michael's bed. He came in separately from us, so we thought a bed-companion would be a nice surprise.
Michael and his new friend.
Penguin on the toilet? WTF?
The penguin's fate the next day.
A Wrinkle-Throated Meadow Penis!

Fat guy.
