But I do think the vast majority of the people (not the criminal element that's causing problems for everyone else), in the ravished areas and our country as a whole assumed that the tax dollars we've paid and with all the technology and sophistocation, would amount to something better than what we've been seeing.
I could probably go on for pages about our government's screwed up priorities - spending and otherwise.
You're right, of course, that too few Americans actually know or care about what's happening in Darfur and the other places of suffering in Africa. I've heard it referred to as "disaster fatigue" and I think this vague sense of "it can't happen here". Until it strikes in our own back yard and then everyone is shell-shocked.
