The animal and the intellectual are parallel systems, not either/or. At varying times, one or the other may be ascendant, but even then the other still exists. Another interesting way to look at the subject is along the Freudian id-superego struggle.
On a separate subject, isn't saying "Nations cause wars" kind of like saying "Cars cause car wrecks"? I mean, of course you have to have a central government of some type, whether nations, states, city-states, or whatever, in order to have wars, by definition, right?
Yeah, exactly. But people still don't ever think about that, because we're taught, from when we're young, to be blinded by our nation being the best and most perfect. Wars are caused because others just don't understand this. ;)
