I was out taking some photos and near the end of the day, a man stopped me and asked me what I was doing. So I gave him the usual, historical project…ra ra ra…photos of every property in Australia…ra ra ra… and he still wasn’t happy

picture or no picture, if anyone could be bothered "stealing" his ideas, all they'd have to do is go and stand in the street. after all, it wasn't all that hard for you to do it.
and anyway, what does he care if someone else makes a similar building to his??
heh heh! tell us where this guy lives so we can all go and stand outside and peer at the place like we're taking mental notes. get the guy really paranoid...
I can sort of understand where he's coming from, but as you say, Tormy, his work is on display. If anyone really wanted to, they could very easily rip off his idea and build places just like it across the country. I'm pretty confident there's nothing he can do about it.
Quite honestly, I think the idea of a massive database of people's properties is pretty scary. It's totally Big Brother-ish. It doesn't work for me. :/
I know what you are saying but having a database of properties is a lot less scary then being forced to do the censuses where far more details of our lives get entered into the database...
BTW, does anyone know the number to David Copperfield? If he can make the Statue of Liberty disappear, he should be able to help this guy.
Actually, it's quite interesting to think about. Artists like writers, musicians and painters strive to impact popular culture. But if an Architect is influential and other people start reiterating their ideas, then all of a sudden it's harder for them to find a job.
So Architects are like artists who for the main part, do not want to influence popular culture at all, whilst simultaneously being fresh and original ... How interesting.
Well, let's say for the time being that architecture is an art. I know that most people wouldn't really consider it an art because it's not so much about personal expression, but it's interesting to compare it this way so I continue

Seriously, I don't understand the architect. It's like if I build a website, I would hide all of the backend codes and database from the public (eg the blue prints for the architect) but I would still want people to see the actual website. There's really nothing I can do if someone decides that they like the look and feel of the website and copy it unless I refused to publish the website in the first place.
The problem for this architect is catch 22. How can he make a name for himself and get more job offers and yet refuse to let people see his designs and buildings?
