Footnotes:
#2: Yes, there is an
Apple Week in addition to National Apple Day.
#3: I say he was found around 1570 because a big bit of Ulster conflict with the British came into play in 1594 with the start of the
Nine Years' War, which was an uprising of the Ó Neill and Ó Donnell and their allies against the Engish, who were attempting to take complete control of the island. In the 1570's the English had already gotten a colony started near Carrickfergus, on Belfast Lough. Also, "leanbh móin" is Irish for "peat child".
#4: Old superstitions say its bad luck to kill spiders, and as he's still got some memory of his druid/heathen/magic teachings from his older siblings... let's just say that superstition stuck indefinitely.
#5: 1972 was arguably one of the worst years of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. With eleven or twelve different incidents that year, 1975 possibly being the only year as bad as that in terms of incident counts.
#14: In my headcanon, shortly before he separated from Ireland to stay with the United Kingdom, Connor dyed his hair from a red that matched Brigid's to something more brownish-blond. He continues dying his hair, sometimes sliding on the darker side and sometimes keeping it blond.
#15: The state of "sobriety" is one that Arthur would be tipsy in, but as Connor is pretty much a full-fledged alcoholic (in my headcanon, anyway), that amount of booze hardly fazes him anymore unless it's a highly concentated mix or something very strong.
#17: This one references back to the Troubles. Now Stars and I have it for headcanon that Brigid gave Connor her share of food during the Great Famine in the mid 1800's that wiped out potato crops all across the island. Northern Ireland, being mostly Protestant like England, was given more assistance than the Catholic majority.
#18: In 1921, a year after Ireland claimed independence, Northern Ireland chose to opt out of the Irish Free State and stay a part of the United Kingdom.
#20: Yes, this one gets a footnote. With all the bombings, riots, etc. that have gone on in Belfast, it's given Connor a lot of scarring over his heart and some slight heart issues. (Belfast = capital city = heart) He figures a seculded capital would mean less people and then possibly solve the massive target issues and put his pains elsewhere.
#21: Take a look at
this map, and point to where Londonderry/Derry is. The headaches caused by riots and such up there will make sense, as do other injuries inflicted on the poor boy.
#23: There is indeed an
Order of St. Patrick. Currently, the only members are Queen Elizabeth II, and Thomas Woodcock, the Norroy and Ulster King of Arms. ...Also Brigid and Connor. >_>
#24:
That horrible day in April. #26: 19th century was literally the century that Europe went to hell and back. For the UK it meant the Act of Union which is considered a forced (and unwanted) marriage on the parts of Brigid and Arthur, the Great Famine (with almost no help from anyone else, save Turkey), Arthur going crazy, Brigid's imprisonment in the Tower of London... need I go on?
#27: Headcanon, how I love thee. He may not have been shot during World War II, but he did find a good number of bullets getting fired into him during the Troubles.
#28: His "nephews and niece" are Alfred, Matthew, and Terra. The solemn stick in the mud is Ludwig, who he would play with (or attempt to) whenever Brigid brought him along while she "spent time" with Gilbert.
#30: Believe it or not, there are still Orange Order marches going on today. They just don't cause as many riots as they did in 2005 and going way back to a 1795 sermon at Drumcree Church. The purpose and significance of these July 12th marches and that sermon? Why to commemorate the Battle of the Boyne back in 1690.
#31: Act of Union 1801.
#32: Bernie-->
Bernadette Devlin, youngest female Westminster MP representing the Mid Ulster constituency, and noted to have been referred to as Fidel Castro in a miniskirt" by Protestant Critics. :'D
#33:
Good Friday Agreement was the agreed end for the Troubles, however, that didn't stop some groups from continuing on their violent ways even as far as this year (2010).
#34: May 17th, 1974, the UVF detonated three bombs in Dublin and another one in Monaghan, killing a total of 33 civilians and wounding 300 more.
#36: Now if I told you, my reasoning for this one it wouldn't be much of a secret, huh? Let's just say, this is one piece of headcanon that's better left to personal interpretation, hm?
#37: The legend goes that St. Patrick drove out all the snakes from the island of Ireland, but
science tells us otherwise.
#38: Courtesy of the generally mild conditions of Ireland,
it doesn't snow much in the Republic of Ireland or
Northern Ireland either. An exception being the elevated areas of Northern Ireland, which regularly gets snow every year.
#39: His siblings and a good chunk of Europe were sea-faring nations before and after his apperance
#40:
See here for more details. :>
#42:
Bernie returns here in mention with her husband, who she married in 1973, after the birth of her daughter.
#43: Using
this timeline, I counted more incidents during the Troubles in July than any other month.
#48: This one calls back to the 1921 split.
#50:
Guy Fawkes Night is not commonly celebrated in Northern Ireland, but he wouldn't say no to setting off fireworks or starting up a bonfire.
Other notes:
- Use of Hetalia OCs: Connor/Northern Ireland belongs to me/
later_days, Douglas/Scotland belongs to Shugo/
eats_typos, Llewellyn/Wales belongs to Kyah/
kyahryorin, Brigid/Ireland belongs to Stars/
starsandauras, and Terra/Australia* belongs to Ichi/
unspeakingly. All have been borrowed without consent but I thank their muns for being so brilliant as to think them up. I am indebted to your genius.
*I realize there is a canon Australia, but when Ichi first made her, we had no idea bout him. And as I've known her Australia first, I like Terra better. >__>
