Okay folks, I need your input. I'm going to be in the market for a new digital camera soon. I definitely want to have it before I go to Chicago at the end of July. But I'm absolutely clueless as to what brand, make, model, etc etc etc ( Read more... )

We bought our Sony Cybershot in 2007 and it's been amazing. Still going super strong and it's been used a lot. Dropped, scratched, etc. It's great.

It has lots of great pre-set shot styles, and is super user friendly. The only downside I found at first is that you have to buy the Sony memory card, which can be pricey. But I've had zero problems with it.

Ours is a 7.2 megapixel, and we're eyeing a new one:

I have the Olympus Stylus 840 in pink :D

that's the amazon link. I got mine from AMazon and I'm pretty sure I did not pay $170 for it.
It's nice and compact. Takes GREAT pictures. The 5X optical zoom is what sold me.
I to my TTMT on it.
You have to get the Olympus cards though but they aren't any more than any other kind of memory cards. IT also has a decent size view screen.

my first digital camera was some manner of easy share. The screen was tiny and the shutter time was crazy slow.

What about the battery? Is it rechargable or do you use disposables?

I like the fact that it takes good pictures and films videos! The price is also nice. :)

I've had two Canon Powershots and I've loved them. The best part... rechargeable battery. The one I have now takes a second to focus, but it takes really crisp pictures.

I think one of my other concerns, is the quality of video that it takes. I'd be using this camera to film pieces of TTMT (yes, I plan on getting back on the bandwagon!) and I'd want a camera that is good with video clips.

I've recorded my last two TTMT vids on my Canon and they turned out WAY better than my webcam! The sound is much better, too. I was having to use an external mic before!

I hope that link works. I'm on my cellphone. The camera is a Sony H55

if u decide to choose another camera here are a couple things to think about when making your choice.
Zoom, obviously used for zooming not a big deal if you aren't going to be far away from your subject.
Megapixels, the higher the more clarity you get with enlarged photos. If u aren't enlarging then anything higher then 8 is pointless.
Batteries, most cameras come with a rechargeable lithium ion battery. This battery should last a long time but if lost or it dies replacing it will set u back between $30-$50 on average. AA batteries can be very awesome. If u use them use energizer lithium batteries or invest in rechargeable AA. That is what I have and I haven't bought batteries in years.

I've had a Kodak EasyShare and can honestly say our Canon PowerShot was SUCH AN UPGRADE. It was the best camera ever for general shooting--great picture quality, easy transfer to the computer, small enough for my pocket. We'd still be using it if I hadn't buggered it up by taking it on a water ride. *sigh*

We currently have two Nikon CoolPix cameras--mancub has one and we have one. We love them. My only complaint is that for cameras with such great video quality, there is no way to use them as webcams. That's a feature I'd really really like.

Okay, so the Nikon is not great for filming vlogs and whatnot? That's an important factor.

So you think the Powershot would be good for photos and videos?

Sorry for the late reply! I can't reply from work and my nights are crazy.

I recommend you do some research or go with Jen's suggestion since she's actually done it; the CoolPix takes videos just fine, but the models we have aren't webcam-capable. That means they can't connect to a computer for live video streaming/recording.

Your digital camera will need to be capable of that; you'll need the proper cables (like an audio/video to usb cable); and your computer will need the proper drivers to see your digital camera as a video recording device.

There are a few YouTube videos on the topic, if you want to see what I mean about the cables. I've only just begun researching it, so I'm just as much (if not more) of a novice as you!

Oh goodness, I totally worded my original intent incorrectly. :D

I don't want/need a camera that can be connected as a webcam because there's a camera built into my laptop - that's no issue. What I meant was, I want a camera that records decent videos that I can just upload to the laptop and immediately import onto WMM. The files that my kodak saved as, weren't ever compatible with wmm.
