One of the organizations that I volunteered with during the year away is sending the President and Vice-President to the U.S. for an event in CA. They are looking for some help, so if you live in CA or know anyone who does, please forward
Dear Friends of Trama,
In less than two weeks, Amparo and Oralia (Trama’s President and Vice-President) will be traveling to Los Angeles, California for the annual Feria Chapina! The fair brings in people from all over Central America who come to sell their products and meet potential business contacts in the U.S. Needless to say, it will be a wonderful opportunity for Trama, not only to sell some products, but to get the word out about our association in the U.S. and hopefully form some meaningful relationships.
But two weeks is coming up quickly and there is still a lot of preparation to be done! We’re reaching out to our U.S. friends, especially those in California, who may be willing and able to help. Here are some ways you could help:
Transportation Costs: Luckily, the Guatemalan government has decided to pay for the fair costs (renting a booth, etc), but the women have to pay for their plane tickets. Any amount that you could donate towards their plane tickets and other transportation costs while in California would be extremely helpful!
Lodging: July 22-26 we are looking for lodging in the Los Angeles area (the fair is in Inglewood) for the women. It would be wonderful if you could also provide meals while the women are in the house and some transportation (if this is not possible, please still contact us, we can arrange for other transportation).
Food: The ladies informed me that two years ago when they went they ate lunch at the fair and free apples from the hotel for all other meals! We definitely want them to be better fed this time around! If you could provide any meals (sit-down or to-go) or money for them to purchase food, their stomachs would be very grateful!
Transportation: The women will need transportation assistance to and from the fair on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (contact us for a more detailed schedule, although times right now are estimates). They will have some products and materials to bring with them although it shouldn’t require an oversized car to transport everything. If you can help any or all of these days, please let us know!
Promotion & Publicity: Help us get the word out that Trama is coming! We will have an information packet that we can send you electronically for you to print or have printed materials sent to you through another contact in the area. This will include material you can distribute to friends, at your place of work, church, university, favorite coffee shop, etc. Publicity is huge! (although food and lodging is pretty important too!)
Set-up: The women will need help setting up their merchandise booth and area in the business section. Entrance to the fair is free, so if you’d like to come early (or clean up after) it would be a big help. One specific request, if you have a TV with a DVD player the women could use these days to play the Trama documentary at the booth, please let us know!
Shop!: Since the fair is free to enter and four days long, there’s hardly an excuse not to come! Now you don’t have to wait for your next trip to Guatemala or order from our website to get Trama products… come by our booth, greet Amparo & Oralia, and purchase some beautiful textiles!
Donations: Any other financial donations or other services you’d like to offer would, of course, be greatly appreciated!
To help out, or even just send a word of encouragement to the ladies, you can contact us at trama.textiles@yahoo.com. To find out more about Trama, visit our website at www.tramatextiles.org. To find out more about the Feria Chapina in Los Angeles, go to www.feriachapina.com.gt.
Your solidarity and support is worth so much in making this possible. The women often speak fondly of past weaving students, volunteers and other people who have passed through Trama. They’d love the opportunity to reconnect and have you involved in Trama again!
Since time is short, please contact us as soon as possible if you can help in any way! Thanks in advance for your partnership!
