I started some temporary work at my aunt's law firm, helping them with their backlog of paperwork that needs to get processed before the end of the year. Today was just sitting in a office doing clerical stuff, which was perfectly fine. Tomorrow the woman who handles all the phone calls at the front desk will be away and some sadistic person ( Read more... )

Oh, man, I sympathize; is there at least a list of numbers at the desk you can use? It sounds like they didn't give you much forewarning or training, which really sucks. People who a) don't have to use complicated phones or b) have used them for years don't understand how intimidating they are, they should've at least given you a cheat sheet or SOMETHING. Ugh. Good luck soldiering through tomorrow! /HUG

From what I gather there's only one number for the whole firm (my phone) and I use the transfer feature to get all the calls to the right people, which is where the million different buttons come in. They're labeled but half the labels are faded or they only use the person's initials, and that combined with the fact that I've only had a crash course in learning who's who around the office is making me nervous. I made a little cheat sheet of people's names and who works for who, and I really hope the lawyers at least introduce themselves to me when they come in.

Thanks for the luck and hugs <3 If I do badly they'll probably never ask me to do it again, at the very least!

It's nearly giving me a panic attack just reading about it! Throwing a new person onto phone duty is never a fair thing to do. Maybe you should hit the liquor store before work.

Being the lawyer for the Borg has to be the most bad-ass job in the entire galaxy. Fantastic!

Heh, the woman who's usually there agreed that it's weird they'd have me on phones my second day. So at least she'll be understanding if I leave her with a desk full incomprehensible phone messages and stress doodles.

There's some sort of joke about lawyers being evil IN SPACE in there but I'm too lazy to think of it.

At this point I just hope they'll be lenient with my inevitable fumblings!

oh god that sounds terrifying. I'm actually filling in answering the phones for our receptionist today because she's out. blehhh. I've been here 2 years and still have to look at the printed out directions on how to work our phone. And the button for transferring calls doesn't say anything related to the word "transfer" (its some random letters) so I always forget which one it is. Screw phones!

Is the law firm you're working at in center city?

No, it's in Media, near the Media courthouse.

Oh man, phone stress for both of us today. Complicated phones are intimidating! It's that combination of "I'm not sure how to use this machine" and "These calls are probably important so I can't mess up" that really gets you. But I just got home, and I survived. I think I lucked out since things weren't as busy I expected.
