"That's because you gotta share this room with three other people," came the cheerful reply from the top bunk. A messy, colourful bunch of hair peeked over the bed where Era had been playing with Zeke. Blue eyes, though maybe not as sparkling as Togunn's, still sparkled enough with joy and curiosity as she gazed down at the new girl.
"Are you gonna be a new girl here? If so, you'd better meet up with Zeke so he can recognize you. He has a tendency to shock strangers, because they might do bad things to him. He doesn't want to harm anyone, it's really just self-defense. But if you two make friends, he won't shock you ever. Unless you hurt him, of course."
No sooner than she spoke did another voice respond in kind. A curious-looking girl with a mop of rainbow hair popped up from where she lay hidden, apparently entertaining herself with some form of creature.
"Hey! I mean...Verily!" Somewhat startled, the warrior princess looked up at the sudden appearance of she who claimed to be a new roommate. "That cannot be. I was told that I shall reside in a room of my own..."
Torunn withdrew a folded piece of paper, looking at it for a moment as the girl's words were confirmed as fact. "It is true, that which you say." She spoke with hesitation, uncertain of what it would be like to suddenly share all that she had. "I have never shared my room with another before."
"Oh, it'll be a bunch of fun," Era replied confidently to the hesitation of Torunn. "Much more fun than being alone, I can tell you that. Who'd ever want to be alone? Unless you are one of those less social people who avoid others, of course. But it's still lonely, while this is fun."
She swung down from her bed, with her pet resting on her shoulder. Orange tongue flickered in and out to taste the air of the stranger, and there was a prickly sensation as well.
"This is Zeke," Era introduced her shocker lizard to the new girl. "He's real nice, though a bit shy of strangers. Would you like to hold him?"
The orphan looked curiously at Era for a moment, thinking about those words. But appearing strong and stoic, Torunn refused to let her thoughts become apparent on her face - neither the pangs of loneliness nor the intriguing prospect of what fun the girl promised.
The large satchel Torunn had slung over one shoulder was placed beside her. "Thy pet is...most strange?" The new girl's gaze drifted to the interesting lizard perched on her new roommate's shoulder. She took a step or two closer, taking a closer look at this strange and unusual beast. "I knew not such creatures existed 'pon Midgard fair?"
