New Manga: Gate 7
CLAMP's working on a new manga!
Gate 7 first appeared as a oneshot in December how was I not aware of this?! and began continuation last month. So far, one chapter is out, the next will be released sometime at the end of this month? It's a monthly magazine, so I'd assume so.
So, about Gate 7. I definitely like it. I know it sounds weird to say, but it's so CLAMP. The artwork, for one, looks like a mesh between xxxHolic and Tokyo Babylon, which is interesting. One of the characters even slightly resembles Subaru, and another, Watanuki. The fighting (spellcasting) is also very much like Tokyo Babylon. But none of these similarities are enough to distract from the story. Although the story is still somewhat vague. Basically we are presented with Watanuki Takamoto, a high school boy who visits Kyoto for the first time from Tokyo. There he somehow runs into three people with fantastic -- magical? -- abilities (that apparently have no effect on him) and it's all downhill from there. More information is given, but I'm not trying to write a summary.
Hana (above), whose gender was not stated (and probably won't be), is as cute as anything. Incredibly small with a surprisingly mature face, Hana is also more than capable of kicking your butt. That is cool.
Hana is one of the three people that Takamoto meets, the other two being Subaru Tachibana (there are also moments where he slightly resembles Doumeki) and Sakura. I think that needs to be written twice: Sakura. Just the name itself should be setting off worldwide alarm bells. For more reasons than the fact that I've never met a male Sakura before. CLAMP has a thing for "Sakura", both the tree and name. I'm instantly reminded of the phrase "swept away by the Sakura" from Tokyo Babylon. Also there was Sakura the Cardcaptor who prevented the world's end, Sakura from TRC, one of the most powerful beings in CLAMPverse, and Seishirou Sakurazukamori, the awesome dangerous assassin (also from Tokyo Babylon). And now we are presented yet again with a character named Sakura. This has got to mean something.
After reading the pilot and chapter 1, I'd say that the series is off to a great start, and I'm more than excited for the next chapter :D
...And I really like Hana.
