OC or AU: AU
Character Name: Danny Masters
Series: Danny Phantom
Gender: Male
Age: 15 (although if we want to get technical, he is around a year old)
Requested Sponsor: Diamond
Entry position (Cadet, SeeD, Instructor, other): Cadet
Appearance: Extremely similar in appearance to Danny Fenton, the only difference being that Danny Masters is slightly scrawnier. So, basically, he looks like a regular old teenager. He is average height (around 5'5”-ish) with messy black reverse-mullet hair and light blue eyes. He generally wears fairly casual clothing. ...Or, you could just look
here.
History: Unfortunately, I need to explain some story here that isn’t directly related to Danny Masters’ history. Bear with me while I shove info about canon and Vlad down your throats.
This AU follows canon events up until the episode Kindred Spirits. In this episode, it is revealed that the big bad creepy villain Vlad Masters has been creating clones of his teenage nemesis, Danny Fenton/Phantom, a half-ghost superhero. Four of the five clones were failed experiments with varying physical deformities, so Vlad kidnapped Danny in order to obtain the DNA needed to stabilize the fifth, and thus far perfect, clone. Danny fought back against Vlad, who was pretty much in the middle of having a complete batshit meltdown (at this point in time, Vlad was clearly mentally unstable, and Danny ruining his plan for the clones was the last straw). This is where canon and the AU separate: originally, in the fight, the fifth clone destabilized and melted away into nothing, causing Vlad to completely lose his shit and for the first time attempt to all-out kill Danny. In this AU, the fifth clone was unharmed, Danny escaped, and the failed clones either died or disappeared. Vlad had lost and had nothing left-except for the fifth clone, who could still be the son Vlad had so desperately wanted in the first place.
Vlad gave up on antagonizing and/or trying to woo the Fenton family after that, realizing that his hopes of revenge on the Fentons were doomed to fail and now unnecessary. He kept the clone alive and finally managed to stabilize him, even without the ghostly DNA he had needed. Unfortunately, that meant the ectoplasm in the clone’s DNA had to be removed, leaving him slightly unstable and rather weak. But that didn't matter any more. Vlad finally had the family he'd wanted for so many years, as Danny Masters immediately attached himself to Vlad, seeing the man as his father.
And so Danny was raised and lived in a massive castle in Wisconsin with a half-ghost billionaire. He had private tutors and everything he could possibly ever want. He rarely left the house in the one year during which he was alive. Vlad was perfectly aware of his physical limitations and was very concerned about him. He had frequent doctor visits and his rare excursions outside were accompanied by a nurse. Beyond that, he rarely ever left the mansion and never really had a chance to meet any kids his age to befriend. Lonely? Yes, a little, but Danny never resented it or his father. That was just life.
He never learned of his origins. His memories before the age of fourteen are very foggy, if present at all (and those he does have are fake), although he has extremely faint and confusing memories of the lab where he was created. He usually ignores them, but sometimes, they leave him feeling disconnected and 'fake' for a reason he knows is there but can't quite place.
Danny is also unaware of the fact that his father is half-ghost, or that he associates with ghosts frequently-the most he knows is that Vlad was interested in paranormal sciences in college and still pursues experimental science as a hobby. He is also unaware of Vlad's, uh, continued morally ambiguous dealings with ghosts and the Ghost Zone.
Life was very happy for both 'father' and 'son' until a few months ago, when Danny was ten months old (but thought himself to be approaching his fifteenth birthday). He began showing signs of ghost powers. He found himself involuntarily becoming invisible or intangible, or sometimes shooting beams of ectoplasmic energy from his hands. As it turns out, however much of the ghostly DNA Vlad tried to take away, some of it still remained, as it had been such an integral part of the original Danny Fenton’s genetic structure. He was understandably freaked out, but hid it from his father, instead trying to work these powers out for himself. It became worse when he realized that using these powers made him incredibly tired out and weak...and after using them a lot, he would find himself starting to melt a little. At this point, he was too terrified to even mention this to his father. And so, he kept it hidden. Vlad knew that Danny was lying about something, but did not press the matter further. This has, unfortunately, created a growing rift in their relationship.
World History: The world of Danny Phantom (and this AU) is very, very similar to our own world in the present-day, the main difference being the existence of ghosts along with half-ghosts like Vlad. Ectoplasm is real and can be used in science to experiment on or even break a hole between dimensions into the Ghost Zone as well as create a wide range of weaponry. This has caused ghosts to become far more common in the human realm, leading to Amity Park (where the Fenton family portal is) to becoming known as the most haunted city in America. This has also resulted in the formation of the GIW (Guys In White), a governmental ghost hunting agency, as well as other, small, independent ghost hunting groups. Largely, though, it seems that the world is still oblivious to the existence of ghosts and is thus pretty much the same as our own world.
Abilities & Physical Abnormalities: As mentioned above-his powers are limited to invisibility, intangibility, and weak ectoplasmic blasts. Even then, using these abilities will tire him out greatly and, if he pushes himself too much, he will begin to melt like all the other unstable clones. (He doesn't easily melt into a puddle of green goo, though-the worst it gets is as though he's sweating after a long run, except more disgusting.) Otherwise, he is not particularly fit and, in fact, bruises rather easily and has trouble breathing sometimes. (Thankfully, he has an inhaler for that.) His immune system is also pretty crap and as such catches all sorts of bugs frequently, which is the main reason why he rarely left home.
Personality: A lot of Danny’s personality stems from the way he was raised. Which is to say, isolated, with no one to talk to aside from Vlad and the staff in his mansion (and that doesn’t really count) and a few online friends he made through forums and games. Danny would never say that he resents his upbringing or his father-in fact, he unquestionably loves his father-but that doesn’t change the fact that he barely has any friends, and Danny, whether he realizes it or not, is greatly affected by his interpersonal relationships (or lack thereof). Which means that this is a pretty lonely kid we’ve got here.
As a result, Danny Masters scores pretty high on the friendliness scale, to an almost ridiculous degree. He will almost always talk like a friend to you, even if you’re really suspicious. Generally, as long as you’re not Obviously Evil, Danny is cool with you. And despite his willingness to talk to anyone and everyone, he can come across as shy and a wallflower due to just not knowing how to really interact with people. He stumbles over his words, is fairly quiet and can be slow to respond as he tries to work out the right thing to say at what time, and sometimes misinterprets other peoples’ statements. Thankfully, he's a little better when communicating through text, even if he sounds a lot more neutral and unaffected that way.
Danny is also extremely naïve, which is largely why he is okay with most suspicious people-anything that might set alarm bells off in a normal person’s head don't really register in his mind. He doesn’t really know any better and gives everyone the benefit of the doubt. And he learns largely by experience, not just being told something, so he won't be wary of a person based solely off of hearsay; he would only start avoiding someone if he had solid proof of them being suspicious enough to avoid.
He’s also rather self-conscious, wondering what people think of him, if they like him, if he’s cool enough, if he’s doing something wrong… He doesn’t let it show much (he hopes), but inwardly, he’s a little nervous about all this stuff. He just hopes he’s not getting on anyone’s bad side. This would be an issue for him even around friends, as he would be afraid of driving them away somehow. In a way, you could actually tell when Danny’s found a true-blue best friend because he would stop worrying so much about this and relax a lot more. He’d start showing some of his more subdued personality traits, like how he can actually be pretty confident, or how his sense of humor is absolutely DREADFUL (sorry to say, dude, but lame puns are totally horrible), or how he is almost viciously protective of his friends, however few or weird they may be. Danny trusts and believes in these people, so he will stand by their side and defend them no matter what.
If, however, you manage to break through Danny’s steadfast belief that pretty much everyone is inherently friendly and good and manage to really bother him or anger him, you’ll find that he tends to respond with harsh words and verbal attacks. He becomes curt, snippy, and is likely to turn your own words against you. He also tends to use sarcasm when seriously peeved. He doesn't tend to take action based on his anger though, and even if he does, he takes his time to deliberate what he's doing and if it's worth it (as opposed to charging in headfirst impulsively).
Danny is smart, but in a very sort of selective way. Academically, he does quite well, if not excels (particularly in the sciences). He’s especially good at thinking on his feet and working things out as things happen. But, he’s just clueless when it comes to people. Body language? What’s that? Romance? How does that work? And honestly, as far as learning how people work, Danny can only get so far-at some point, things will just stop making sense (i.e. GIRLS) and he will just have to deal with the fact that he is, ahem, clueless.
What are your plans for the character in-game? Basically, just give him a chance to experience life beyond his limited experiences back home and see how it affects him, long-term and short-term, good or bad.
Anything else? Just a note! This journal is generally used for Danny Fenton/Phantom, but I'll be using it for this AU of his clone because paid accounts are wonderful things full of wonderful icons. Which is why this account's name is listed as “Danny Fenton.” Pay no attention to that. It's full of lies.
