Hey now.

Your rules are flawed.

Should be:

positive + positive = positive
negative + positive = the sign of the larger number
negative + negative = negative

Think of it like this: (this is a story I told one of the kids I used to tutor)

You have so much money in the bank account. You add a check, still positive.

You take some out...How much did you take out? Did you take out more than you had available? Then you are in the negatives. Did you take out an amount that left some money still in your account? Still in the positives.

Did your account start out negative, then you spent more money, and now you owe even more? Further in to the negatives.

Could be I have no idea what this cryptic ass post meant.
But it was fun talking about math anyway.
