Okay, I am in no way new to totem animals, I've had several in my life. From having Wolf as a Companion/Guardian totem as a child before I knew just what it was, to Bear when I needed some courage, and finally Vulture when I needed to do some life cleaning.
But lately I am at a loss. I need the guidance of a totem/Spirit Guide, but neither Vulture

Sometimes a totem will be overlooked if we don't "want" that particular totem also, so pay attention to the little animals around you too, like insects who might be trying to connect with you.
Also, I would suggest that being in a state of desperation may cloud your ability to connect as well - what we focus on is where our power goes and what we manifest so if you are constantly focusing on your inability connect to your totem, then you will continue to experience that. Relax, visualise connecting with the totem, and see what comes - but you do need to release that feeling of desperation.

Then watch and listen to EVERYTHING during the day (TV, signs, songs on the radio, magazine ads, billboards, listen to conversation, etc.) to see what shows up. Good luck!
