Crows, Jackdaws, and Magpies, oh my

I recently traveled to Ireland -insert soul deep joy here- and among the awesomeness of the experience was a bit of stalking. By birds, that is. I'm pretty familiar, being from the USA (living in Shanghai currently, for those curious), with the typical American Crow. I have no idea if this is helpful at all, and please feel free to discard, but I wrote a full totem essay on Magpie (http://www.wildspeak.com/vilturj/totems/wmagpie.html) at my totem dictionary. But alas, no personal experiences with them, since we have Australian Magpies here, and they aren't even corvids.

I personally find sometimes great differentiation not only between types of corvid, but even between subspecies of the same species, depending on where they live and how geographically different the environments. I've never - for example - understood conflating raven with crow. And certainly not say, Common Raven with Australian Raven.
