Real quick--I was working on writing the Bioregional Totemism chapter of Neopagan Totemism, and I realized that in working with totems, totemism, and totemists over the past 15 years, there's a weird trend--not only do many people not ever see the physical counterparts of the animal totems they work with, but they often don't even live in the same

One is not local (Jaguar, unless you consider the extinct European Jaguar, which at times is thought of as a subspecies). As for the others (such as Common Raven, Basking Shark, Common/European Kingfisher, Little Egret and such as) they can be found in my homeland - though I've never spotted the sharks in the coasts I visited, probably too close/frequented by humans; I just know they can be found not very far.

When I first found Jaguar, i lived in Arizona, part of it's former territory. Now i live in Michigan.
Jaguar's original range included south america and southern north america. Hyena, obviously, is in Africa.

Black panther and Horse (Stallion specifically) have been around for a long time; Tiger (Bengal) showed up a few years back and seems to have become part of the triad. I'm from Michigan, to which neither feline is native, but horses are around (though domestic not wild). Ironically, I'm currently living in China so I'm much closer to tiger's home than before.
Others I've had contact with: Crow, Vulture (who from what I've read tends to stay once it's shown up), Skunk, Bat, and for awhile it seemed like a bird species (still trying to identify) common in Shanghai has been stalking me. When I dealt with previous ones, I was in the States where they're common.
