The thing with Ayanami is that he's basically VERY much out of his element and perpetually in a sour mood because of it- I have to be careful how much humiliation I inflict on him, for example, because while his grumpiness is hilarious it's treading a thin line before pushing him to the point of being unplayable. While on the other hand he still has to be doing something or else he again becomes playable.... the result is basically that he ends up most of the time being like, well, a tiger pacing inside a too-small cage.
The important point to remember is that he can't do anything about his plans in camp. The Eye of Michael, Pandora's Box, etc, are all back home*, so all that he can do RIGHT NOW is maintain the status quo so as to ensure that his plans will continue uninterrupted whenever they do get back home.
