san francisco

San Francisco weirds me out. Really. Strange fucking town it is. We all know that the cost of living there is extremely high--although it's not like Santa Cruz is anything one might call cheap--but there's something about that city that's so off to me. I've met a number of awesome people there, but the general vibe is amost like the city is one ( Read more... )

wow, is it really a post from you? huh!

i agree, when you are in detroit and oakland...you know when the streets turn mean. but i have to disagree about SF...walk down the tenderloin, along golden gate and turk and you will know you are in the shit hole. i use to look out the window of my office building on golden gate and see slumped bodied with needles literally in arms....and i pretty much knew i was in the middle of depression. the mission is confusing though. its hard to know when to watch your back and when to order tapas.

i knew moving to new york i would feel like i had to be on top of cool all the time, which is completely unrealistic for me cause i am so not cool. not in a hipster-scene kind of way. which is fine. i didn't feel like that in san francisco...but moving to the east bay from detroit i did feel like i would turn into an E popping sex fiend...but that didn't happen *whew*

i can't wait to move back to the east bay.

That's interesting--I actually haven't been to the TL or Golden Gate. I've been most of the touristy places--the Wharf, Union Square, MOMA, the Haight, the Castro, the Mission, Bernal Heights, the valley, etc.

Also interesting because I never quite felt the compulsion to feel/act/look cool in New York like I do in San Francisco. Maybe it has something to do with having Santa Cruz as a relatively uncool place in comparison.

That's funny, because one could just as easily become an e-popping sex fiend in Detroit. Heh, what a city...

good to hear from you
and that sounds like some shit I would think about SF
like that the normal milestones, bench markers and compasses doesn't apply
in a weird way when i went to Cuba it was similar, dilapidated buildings, peeling paint, or luxurious colonial buildings did not let me know when I was with poor people, white people black people, with intellectuals etc.

the boundaries were blurred but in a good way !

I've always thought of oakland as san francisco's ghetto. I know that there ARE ghettos in sf but I've gotten the impression [couldn't tell you how] that even the nastiest parts of sf have been gentrified beyond belief.

I like sf a lot but I don't think I'd want to live there. :>

but lately, OMG, I miss new york.

I saw some of your posts over at the Marxism community, and we're both friends with Thea, so I thought I might add you. I hope you don't mind, but if you do just let me know. My name's Tristan.
