A. “This isn't right, this isn't even wrong.” Wolfgang Pauli
One of the earliest lessons Melody O'Neill learned was that sometimes people had to do things they didn't want to do for the greater good. She was six when she finally started to understand it.
The glowing red numbers on the clock read 3:15 when her parents' voices woke her from a sound sleep. Melody rubbed her eyes and padded down the steps. Her parents were so involved in their conversation that they didn't notice her climb up in her favorite chair.
"Did you really expect me to be happy about this, Jon?" her mother demanded, hands on her hips.
"No, I knew you were going to be mad," her father said, running a hand through his hair and letting out an exasperated sigh. "But, baby, what do you want me to do? I have to do this. You know that. And you know damn well that you would do the same thing if it was your family."
"There's a big difference there and you know it," her mother said. "I can't get killed. You can. And what do you think that would do to me? Or Melody?"
Melody had no idea what they were fighting about, but she understood what killed meant. "I don't want you to die, Daddy!"
Both of her parents spun around and stared at her in confusion. "Melly, when did you come downstairs?" her mother asked.
She shrugged; telling time was still kind of new for her. Besides, there were more important things to worry about. Her lower lip was wobbling as she climbed off the chair and attached herself to her father's leg. "Don't go nowhere, Daddy," she begged.
He lifted her into his arms and stroked one hand over her hair. "I have to go, honey. Uncle Jack and Uncle Daniel need me."
"But I don't want you to die!" she insisted, wrapping her arms around his neck as tight as she could.
"I'm not going to die," he promised.
"But Mommy said!"
Her mother walked over and placed a hand on her back. "Mommy is just worried. Daddy's job can be dangerous sometimes."
"So why can't he stay home with us?" Melody asked.
"Because as much as I love you both, sometimes I have to do things that will help a lot of people," he explained. "And this is one of them.
