That's OK, the economy's still on an upswing. We know this because all the companies and funds that received billions of bailout money posted much better figures than they would have otherwise. Jobs and consumer spending are Old Economy. Can't you smell the recovery?

Unemployment numbers are a lagging indicator, so the economy could be in an upswing solidly with unemployment numbers still rising. Companies tend to be like a fat kid with cake. If you take the cake (money) away from them for a while then start giving it back, the kid ain't gonna share his excess cake for a while.

Percentages just don't have the same kick as "1 out of 10 people."
