I know what I'll get myself for christmas :9

But for now NIGHTWISH! DARK PASSION PLAY! FINALLY! ♥
my first online music purchase :D

It's sososo utterly beautiful.
It's different.
It's familiar.
It's complex.
It's catchy.
It's brutal.
It's delicate.
It's Nightwish.

Somehow the "wickedness" that was always so typical of their sound increased, also its power and feeling. It's rough, but it shows that they've taken their music up one step.
Can't wait for their next album. Now it's clear that Nightwish's music will continue and grow even more. But for now I will just enjoy this album ♥
(impression after hearing The Poet and The Pendulum)

As you'll be able to see, I sometimes change my opinion rather quickly... or just say I'd like to modify it a bit.

The album as a whole is very... mixed.
Actually I'm partly disappointed. Although there are really beautiful songs on Dark Passion Play, there are also some which appear headless, a bit uninspired and some are just purely aggressive.
I would never have thought I'd once critise Nightwish's songwriting, but, yes.
Some melodies are just really uninspired and one melody line repeated for a whole song is just... disappointing. Especially in a Nightwish song.
In Meadows of Heaven you also hear how this song was intended to be the big ballad of this album. But just using a predictable "ballad scheme" and some fancy gospel choir doesn't make this song into a second "Sleeping Sun".
The great thing about Nightwish's former ballads was that they are mostly very subtle (for Nightwish ;)) and a bit understated. And all the more powerful.
Although I really like the new shores Nightwish are exploring (for example in The Islander) I'm a bit biased about the new use of the fiddle and Irish elements. Hell, they are just too overused and since Nightwish are already heavily inspired by film scores like Lord of the Rings, it makes some songs sound like a Rohan soundtrack >____>

But nevertheless they are still Nightwish. A lot of songs on this album state that clearly and - like I said - take it even up a notch. Even in the less felicitous songs you can hear Nightwish's beauty shine through.

A note about the singer... After so many albums with Tarja's voice and the typical "Nightwish" feeling also in this album, it takes a bit to get used to her voice.
I'm still not sure about her. She has a really beautiful voice in the softer and the higher parts, her wonderful timbre comes out then... but although she has a strong voice I don't think it's really suited for Rock. It's a bit squawking(?) (German: quäkig) in the louder parts and it's always doubled, so you can hear it against the orchestra and the band -____-;

HMMMMMM...
I'm pretty sure I will change my mind after listening to the album more often... At least I hope I'll change it.
