First meeting. (Open to John)

Jul 16, 2006 23:45

Alex drummed her acrylic nails on the table, trying to tap out the butterflies before John showed up. She knew he was probably as nervous as she was, but that was only a small comfort while she waited for her father to walk through the door of the coffee shop where they'd agreed to meet ( Read more... )

He'd agreed to meet her at a Denny's in LA...not all too far from where she lived. He figured it'd be more comfortable for her, and if he needed to bail for whatever reason, he could and she'd be home in any case ( ... )

Alex had noticed John the instant he'd walked in the door.

She nodded when he said her name, and tried hard not to make John uncomfortable by staring at him. She was failing at that attempt, because in spite of her best efforts Alex was searching his features for some of her own. She was curious to see what part of herself, if anything, had come from the father who she'd gone her entire life without having any knowledge of aside from a name.

Now that Alex was finally meeting the person who that name--her name-- belonged to, she needed a second to take it all in.

"John." She finally stood up to greet him, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her left ear as she did so. Within seconds, Alex was able to offer him a smile and a handshake.

"Its nice to meet you."

John started to reach out to shake her hand, hesitated, then opened his arms instead. "Heck, we're family...best we act like it." he replied with a small, yet very sincere twist of a smile. The fact was, he wanted to hold her, just for a moment...his daughter.

After Sammy had been born, the truth was he'd wanted a little girl...he and Mary both had.He couldn't help but think to himself how much more this would mean if Mary had been Alex's mother instead...but then again, this strange twist of fate, granting his wish, but only half...maybe the universe really did make amends in the end. Maybe this was some kind of twisted compensation for all he'd lost.

After hearing John's words about acting like a family, Alex felt a wave of relief wash over her. It wasn't that she had been hoping for an immediate family connection with him. She really wasn't the type to expect that two strangers could become an instant family just because they shared each other's blood. It just didn't seem all that realistic. Life was never that easy, and the important things-especially the good ones-weren't supposed to be. To Alex, the single greatest force behind bringing people together was time, and she was pretty damn sure that one minute wasn't enough to make her anything other than an accidental daughter to him ( ... )
