There's nothing silly or embarrassing about that. I've been working on perfecting one of my manuscripts for ages because I want to get it published

That's nothing to be embarrassed about! It's a great goal to have - and don't worry about not having any background in it. Storytelling is just that; any number of great writers were just people who knew what they were talking about, or knew what they wanted to do, and sat down and did it.
I dunno how you want to sell your book, but you might want to do some research at some point. The publishing industry is apparently dying in various ways, so it's a lot harder to get signed (although that's done wonders for the legitimacy of self publishing). You could consider your dA & comic audience as an headstart of sorts, since that's a pool of people whose attention you've already caught to some degree. I keep thinking about Abarat and Un Lun Dun, which were both illustrated by the authors. I think a big todo was made about Abarat - your art talent might come in handy as a sell point ^^ Some links... OMG dude do NOT be embarrassed or ashamed! I've wanted to publish a novel since I was 6. LOL I used to fold printer paper in half and staple it together like a book, draw a cover and write on the bottom half of pages and draw on the top halves. I totally think you can do it!!
I used to have a comic that I stopped doing in comic form because the story got so massively wordy and complex in my head that I thought it would be better suited as a novel. It's even more massive now and I'm constantly thinking about it and making mental revisions.
Only I haven't started writing anything yet.
DON'T BE LIKE ME. WRITE THE THING. :OOOO
And pffft educational background? All I learned from taking writing classes in college is that they suck all the joy and personality out of writing. I think the best way to learn is to read other novels. Get a feel for the kind of flow and pacing you like, make note of anything you don't like, and go from there.
