Just got back from the vet, and Sprocket couldn't be happier.
*I*, on the other hand, need a drink.
Before we left, Sprocket was shaking his head excessively. Upon further examination I found that his left ear was bleeding internally. Joy. Oh well, we're going there for the swollen toe anyway, we'll have him check the ears too.
On the way over there, Sprocket had another seizure. (I refer you to my post of April 3:
http://towering-tart.livejournal.com/166935.html) I'll need to clean the drool off the inside of the door, but that can wait.
The vet looked at his toe and immediately suspected a tumor. A malignant tumor. Which means the toe will most likely have to go. ($$$)
But wait! There's more!
It's very likely that any cancer may have spread into the rest of his body. So we'll need blood tests and X-rays to check for that. ($$$)
But wait! If you order now, we'll throw in a heart murmer, absolutely free!
*throws hands up in the air*
So clearly, I have a lot to think about. And a lot to discuss with the husband before I make any plans.
So today, we took care of the ears by way of a cleaning, oral antibiotics, and topical ointment. The vet told me watch to see if the drugs would benefit the toe, but didn't seem optimistic about it.
Next step - blood test and X-ray to look for more complications (more cancer).
Depending on those results, I get to decide if I want to risk surgery on a dog who A) may not survive the anesthisia, or B) may not live long enough for the resultant wound to heal.Right now he appears perfectly happy. He back-sassed me as soon as we got home, then bounded along behind me in the backyard while I harvested his "land mines" and raked the leaves.
I'm determined not to write him off, but my mind keeps going there. SO not looking forward to explaining all this to the husband.
But I have plenty of wine, so that should help a little.
Good puppy ju-ju currently being accepted...
