Personality: At first glance, Rapunzel seems sweet and honest (and a little naive). She has a tendency to smile and see the good and beauty in everyone and everything. She's trusting, perhaps to a fault, and looks at life through the eyes of a child; with pure optimism. It's no surprise, of course, being stuck up in a tower for eighteen years with only the company of her mother, Gothel, and her pet chameleon, Pascal. Her human interaction is limited, at best, and her knowledge of the world only comes from what she can observe from the top of her tower (which isn't much, considering how secluded she is) and what she can read from her books. Despite all of that, she's incredibly spirited and full of life, energy and playfulness, despite not being able to see the outside of her tower.
But she's more than just the "silly little girl" Mother Gothel tells her she is. Underneath that bubbling happiness is a strong girl who, even while afraid, will stand up for herself. She's obedient to her Mother, but that doesn't make her at all subservient, and if she has to, she will fight if need be, both physically and mentally. She has a strong personality that shines through in almost everything she does, and a strong dedication to who she is and what she dreams about; mainly seeing the stars that appear only on her birthday. And on top of that, she is absolutely fearless, except when it comes to ruffians and thugs.
And when she makes a promise, she never ever breaks it.
By a chance meeting with Flynn Rider, her entire world turns upside down. She goes against the wishes of her Mother to never leave the tower and enlists him on a journey to take her to see the floating lights. She's absolutely ruthless when it comes to the thief, using his own stolen treasure as leverage in order to get him to agree to be her guide. She goes against everything her mother taught her all for the sake of pursuing her dream. Upon leaving her tower, she sees the world in a way she had never seen it before, opening her eyes up to what people were really like. Her fearless side comes through when she stops a gang of thugs from selling Flynn for his own bounty, and even turns the Snuggly Duckling into a cabaret of song, dance, and dreams. She affects everyone she meets in a positive way, including Flynn, and encounters dangers that she had never even dreamed of. And she takes it all in stride, not once backing down from the journey once her resolve set in.
She even goes against her Mother again, when confronted at the end of the first day. Mother Gothel attempts to bring her back home, but she resists, still resolute in finishing her journey, but with the added complication of her developing feelings for Flynn (or, as she loves to call him, Eugene). She takes a chance on these feelings and his promise to take her to see the lights, and opens her heart and accepts her fears when she finally sees them. And she's no longer scared anymore.
Abilities: Rapunzel is a girl of many talents. Having been trapped in a tower for eighteen years, she definitely picked up more than a few skills. Not only can she sing, dance, play chess and solve puzzles, knit, cook, bake, garden, and sew, she can also play the guitar, spin pottery, make candles, and map entire charts of the stars. She had no other form of entertainment in her tower than to teach herself her own hobbies, so she's more than self-sufficient. Her favourite hobby, however, is painting, to the point where she turned her entire tower into her own gallery of beautiful and vibrant works. More than anything, she really just loves to create.
Her hair, on the other hand, has abilities of its own. The healing properties of the flower her real mother drank when she was pregnant with her manifested in her long golden hair that, when cut, turns brown and loses its magic. Which means it hasn't been cut in eighteen years and has grown to the length of seventy feet. It has the power to heal the sick and wounded and keep someone alive and young forever, but only when the special incantation is sung. It is also incredibly dexterous and she can use it almost like a prehensile tail: to grasp things, yank thinks, and wrap it around tree branches to swing around as she pleases.
