I'm sorry to hear how rough things have been for you. Chronic depression is not an easy thing to beat on your own. I think that was a great call to make an appointment to speak with a therapist but not going to the appointment because you got cold feet isn't the answer... What are you afraid of living a life free of crippling depression and dark thoughts.

I'd say make the call again and go this time, you are to important to neglect yourself.

1-800-273-TALK(8255)is a nation wide toll free number you can call to speak with people who can help and if things are really dark and really too hard to manage call 911 or simply go to your local emergency room the doctors will get you help.

Hang in there and invest the work into yourself, speaking with a therapist is not a sign of weakness but rather intelligence ;-)

I think more people care about you than you think. But you are still very young and you can change. The point is will you? Do you want to. Depression can be beat but if you stay home all the time then that is not going to happen. I have beat depression a couple of times and it is a road you can always find yourself on when you don't realize it.

make that change

Depression can be a real beast to fight, as the others have pointed out and you should talk to a counselor at this point. The first step in getting better is to get help and there's nothing to be scared of.
I once spoke with a counselor myself and know plenty of others that have as well. When life becomes overbearing and you have all those emotions bearing down on you you should get help, because it sounds like that is what you are asking for in this post.
There is no shame in seeking treatment.

I agree with Furball. Depression is a real monster to deal with, but talking with a professional is a step in the right direction. Heck, even just getting this journal out is probably a good step.

Glad to hear things are still going with your job.

I also agree with Fur Wolf about the getting exercise and eating better. Just getting out for some fresh air a half an hour a day can be a big improvement.

Hang in there, man. You got people that care about you out there. You can do this. It won't be easy, but it'll be for the better.
