Drabble: Corner

Aug 25, 2010 12:39

Written for purestofprose's second drabble contest. Some warning for implied ugliness.

Children have nightmares of monsters under their beds. She lives hers every night on the corner of 4th and 7th.

Children hide under covers. She hides behind lipstick and cheap clothing.

Children have parents to protect them from the monsters. She faces the monsters every evening with nothing more than a half empty can of mace and a prayer.

Children know when the sun comes up the monsters go away. Hers don’t. She sees them on TV screens, issuing parking tickets, buying drugs.

She isn’t a kid and the corner of 4th and 7th remind her of that.
