Fic: Taking the Cloth

Jan 09, 2011 17:58

Entry for brigits_flame 's All-Star Challenge, week on prompt of "taking the cloth".  I didn't end up cutting much at all from this, unfortunately.  The concept is one I've had in mind for awhile and will probably be expanded out into a young adult book... maybe.  Anyway, hope everyone enjoys it!

AAAAH! DANI!!! *tackles*

This comment here is why I love you. You are so dead on about that stupid horse being all non-ominous and cliche. As soon as I get a chance, it's getting axed. *nods*

And you don't need to shut up! I love getting comments from you!

You've really done a great job with fantasy this month! I'm really loving this, and I'm excited to hopefully see more from this universe. The only thing I'd say about this is that it's a lot of delineating which kids were chosen and how the parents felt about it, and not much talk about what makes the Troubadours do what they do. Right now, I'm under the impression that music is feared because the Troubadours are feared because they take children away -- is that correct?

Thank you! To be honest, I've had the concept for this piece in my head for a very, very long time. It really wasn't MEANT to be used for contest purposes... but the piece I'd originally intended to use just wasn't cooperating.

The basic concept for this world is that music = magic. Tuluth is kind of a backwater place, so the impression you got (music is bad because Troubadours take children) is exactly what the villagers feel. They don't really understand the concept of magic or anything like that. All they know is that their children are being taken away.

I'm thinking about continuing this further, either as a future NaNo project or maybe a serial this month. Maybe. I'm not sure yet.
