I've never known anyone to fully succeed on all counts; it's choices.
I was going to grad school... and just walked out one day. Never to return. It was kind of a sucky school compared to my undergrad university, and I wasn't learning anything new from the retirement-focused professors.
So I went to Central and South America, then Micronesia, then New Guinea. I was getting research samples for a lab at my undergrad university; I knew those guys and though they paid me dirt, they paid for plane fare. Got in some rather dangerous situations but they were *all* worth it.
Well, except for the detainments in Mexico and Guatemala, and the gunfire in Ecuador once... that was just stupid.
I went on to make a ton of money (a few times, and spent it all a few times :P ) Happy and broke was better, honestly.
