TWPAHMHMFM (Week 6)

To be honest, I probably should cut about half this answer and let it go with a squee and basic 'here is what I think' and call it done.

Week 6: When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?

Actually, I prefer writing bamf characters. Characters who spark some identity with them. Gender is really irrelevant but I’ll be the first to admit that I tip more in the direction of male over female because I’m primarily an NC-17 slash writer. Hazards of gender preference IRL, I’m afraid.

That’s preference though (two guys having sex), and not because I can’t find/see strong female characters. Bring on the dueling dicks, my friends. Just the way I roll.

The problem with questions like this and with my answers ending up not showing that I’m more egalitarian in my character writing preferences is that it looks a lot like misogyny. Perhaps it is, although I don’t mean it to be. Neither am I really trying to excuse it. Although raising the point does cause me to delve a little deeper into why I don’t write more female characters.

I’m not really getting anywhere, honestly. Images in my head that appeal visually to me are of two guys in bed together. Goes back to me having an affinity to writing sex in fanfiction. Since I write a lot of sex, it’s sort of falling into that I write a lot of guys…having sex.

Then the defensive part of me leaps up and flaps his arms saying ‘but there are female characters that I love! And I will absolutely read and love m/f fics!’ which is true. I just don’t write them because I write sex. And the sex I write involves two dudes. Therefore, I write dudes and not ladies.

So, all this circular thinking caused me to dig a little deeper. I suppose I could branch out into writing females and have them in non-sexedup roles. Seems a little hed iz pasted on yay (age…showing…argh). Can’t I just worship them from afar?

That’s the easy way out.

In my total defensive defense, I do have some fandom female favorites.

Riza Hawkeye is totally bamf and possibly the only reason Roy Mustang stays on his feet a lot of the time. Except when she has to lay him out to save his stupid ass. I won’t write her, though, because she’s perfect the way she is. It would be like defacing a work of art, I’d just butcher her. She’s much too good for Roy. Let me have my Madonna-Riza image, mkay?

Noin from Gundam Wing does everything Zechs does with ¼ the angst and 140% of his competency. She rocks a mobile suit every bit as good as Zech is in his souped up, ultra special phallic symbol Gundam.

Alex Benedetto has a quiet strength considering what she’s been through. And I think bedroom moments between her and Nicolas would be filled with a tenderness that I’m fairly certain he’d have no idea what to do with. In fact, since I do find myself strangely drawn to these two as a pairing, I may try my hand at them. Two broken characters just trying to find some small measure of happiness in a shitastic world? Yes, please.

Also, Gina Paulklee (also from Gangsta.). Wow. She just blows me away. Fierce, capable, kick-ass, don’t-take-anyone’s-bullshit-especially-you-Nicolas…and if I have to go with a preferred body type, she hits all the buttons. Rawr.

I should shut up now. :/
