A fuel crisis, to be or not to be...

I can't believe it...

So I have gas for a few days, fortunately I've always cared about fuel economy. I drive a Kia Sephia. Regardless, say optimally I get about 42 mpg. That means if you are a minimum wage worker making $5 per hour you have to start looking at how far you can afford to drive and still eat and make rent. I'm sure commuters are getting killed. Grocery stores need fuel to get the goods to them, travel industry needs money to move people - I'd go on but you get the idea. Maybe that Reaganomics theory of trickle down economics does work, when we need to pay more money.

This morning a friend told me one station had fuel up to $8 per gallon. That's right - EIGHT dollars PER gallon. I even wonder if the government can or will do anything about this crisis; Hawaii has. Granted it was set for other reasons, but it helps here.

This fuel 'crisis' makes me mad for so many reasons:

1. We have the science for alternative fuels, but haven't implemented them (to a significant degree). Whether it is due to the oil lobby or the automobile lobby doesn't matter. We have lagged behind making our transportation more efficient. (I've been saying this for years)
2. Public transportation is terrible. Now a few cities are better than others, but it is terrible. I don't know, maybe having so much land makes it difficult.
3. We need nuclear power - I would have loved to see a greater implementation of nuclear power (still would). But the community is too gunshy of that power source.
4. Manipulation of the public - I wonder if these inflated prices aren't some kind of tactic by Bush for his oil buddies to make more money. Hey I'm Republican (moderately), but even I think this guy is dropping the ball. My theory is they rake up the prices so when they drop to $2.50 we all sigh in relief. The American public, we are suckers.

I used to love to travel, especially when I competed a lot. That means keeping my trips to the important ones - Less travel in my immediate future (which is terrible).
