Thought I'd share a sight I've come across on the road several times in recent weeks in Amherst, MA. A pale light green Prius has gone past my (2006, Driftwood Beige) Prius with this message emblazoned on its hood

My brother gets his learner's permit this year and I'm debating this very thing. Do I teach him in the Prius and hope that it doesn't confuse him while driving a regular car? Or do I just stick with a regular car for the next year (the one he'll be going for the test in) until I know he has a good understanding of the basics?
I actually talked about this with my daughter when I first saw the Prius and wondered the same thing. (She has had her license for 3 years now.) She thought it would be good to have the student drive the Prius during the "learn the rules of the road" part of the course (in her own course, from a different local school, three students would ride with the instructor, and take brief turns at the wheel; later, they'd have solo lessons). Then they could switch to a regular car to get used to the somewhat different controls. Where we are, the DMV (or RMV, depending on what it's called where you live) makes you go out in one of their more conventional vehicles for the test.
In my daughter's case, her first lessons (before driving school) were in my MIL's car, as both my husband and I had standard transmission vehicles. She could NOT get my car into gear at all! A dying art... :P
Your DMV has special cars just for driving tests?! In CA, they have you use your own.
I knew I wanted one before I started learning how to drive (last year), so I got one, and learned how to drive in it. There was no real problem learning in it, because it was going to be my first car, anyway. The only thing was that for my behind-the-wheel classes, I had to use the Driving School's cars. (Corollas.) But it hardly took any getting used to. I was confused about what to do with the key though! XD But now I don't have to worry about it. :)
In MD, you get to take the test in your own car, so it wouldn't be much of a problem. I'd love to see the Driving schools around here use the Prii (or any hybrid).
