Once the battery gets down to two bars it will start the engine to charge it back up. Pretty easy to accomplish this on a hot day for me, if I have the A/C on and am in stop-and-go traffic. The battery will be fine until you run out of gas, at which point the car will be very unhappy with you and I have no idea what would happen to the battery if you didn't shut it off. :)

Same with me when I've been stuck in traffic. When it gets down to two bars the engine starts up and recharges it. I try to help it out by turning off the air and opening the window.
