on cnn they're saying that it's up to government leaders to look for ways to restore our faith in our country and our ability to feel safe in an airplane, or a tall building, or whatever. but how the hell can they do that? the only way they can even try is to totally crack down on the way we live so freely.

Well, doing that, as I'm sure you realize, won't really make us feel safer. Or, it shouldn't.

As far as what else could be done? More intelligent and less callous international policy.

yep, i agree. it certainly will not make us feel safer.

it's that age-old struggle of trying to get to the root of a problem rather than just covering it up. the scary thing is, it feels like we've gotten so far removed from root level that the only thing left is to chip away at some of the layers. which is a start, i guess... but it seems almost futile to worry about tightened security measures at the airport when more security wouldn't have even prevented what happened this morning, and the real problem is that some people have such a lack of respect for others and their beliefs that they are willing to kill and be killed. how do you ever fix that? i for one admire anyone who can be optimistic in a time like this. i am much more easily pulled into cynicism and depression....
