ode to self-control?

are you ever just amazed at the amount of self-restraint the average adult possesses? i mean, occasionally it hits me: at any moment, i could blurt out the most inappropriate comment. i could say the one thing guaranteed to offend present company, but nine times out of ten (okay, seven times out of ten, perhaps), "present company" consists of ( Read more... )

I've often told the ugly truth knowing how bad it would be taken. I try to only be phony with people I don't like. Sure, I do have the occasional "I could knock him cold with one punch" moment when a friend is just sitting there endlessly yapping that I don't act on...but, my thoughts are pretty much always shared with friends if they're relevant. A sign of a good friend is someone who you can tell to shut the hell up...or is that just a sign that someone is 50 lbs lighter and a foot shorter than you ?

So nice to have you back...

I think this is why I get so annoyed with office politics. It all has to do with hiding the way you really feel or think and putting on a good image for the "important people." You gotta look good when you meet the director, don't say anything you'll regret and definitely don't express your opinion cuz you could be embarassed or even fired.

It's all crap. What's the point of putting on a suit and making small talk for an hour and leaving having accomplished nothing? And did you ever notice that the word "candid" takes on a whole different meaning when there are politics involved. Be candid, but make sure you don't offend anyone!n

It's great to be back, Sharon! In other news:

I am definitely against office politics and my project manager at work is, as well. He said that when he first got there he tried to confront people and get everyone's greivances out in the open. Turns out that people would rather lie to avoid confrontation than just have one big fight and end it. Everytime he called these people on what he heard second hand, all parties would deny having any problem.

It's not all that surprising to me, since I've brought up this issue to my other supervisors and they all say that it's not a major factor. One even said "it's not like someone's going to say I'm a bad manager". Oddly enough, that's exactly what everyone is saying about her...Our parent department is $1 million in the hole and they're still playing "nice" with each other. Sorta lends credence to the "Atlas Shrugged" plot where all the decision makers of the world quit and let the yes-men run everything into the ground.
