Staying on the boat is definitely the best option though you still regard the captain’s glowing eyes with suspicion. You keep your eyes locked on him for any suspicious movement, but you still jump when he raises one of his gnarled hands to point into the distance behind you.
Turning your head to look, you notice a mirror of the captain’s eyes glowing, a small pinpoint of light in an otherwise pitch black expanse.
“You always need a light to guide you to shore,” the captain says by way of explanation.
The boat continues to float steadily onwards, and you watch the light in the distance grow brighter and brighter until the boat is bumping gently against the shore. The owner of the second pair of glowing eyes approached the boat, and you find your breath caught in your throat. However, the owner is a frail older woman who smiles warmly at you and the captain.
“Rescue another one, did you, dear?”
The captain helps you out of the boat and keeps a steady hand on your shoulder to keep your wobbly legs from fully giving out on you.
“Thought I was going to lose her about halfway through when the eyes lit up, but she held in there. Brave, sensible thing, I think,” the captain says.
The woman pats your other shoulder, her gentle smile never leaving her face.
“Quite alright. The eyes are a bit of a shock, aren’t they? And this mangy old man with a face like death probably doesn’t help matters. But you made the right choice. The water is a dangerous place, and very dangerous things keep their homes in its depths.”
You are already growing fond of this strange, old couple with their odd, magical eyes lit like beacons calling each other safely home. It’s all very romantic.
“But enough of that, you both look cold and tired. How about some dinner?”
