CHOICE SIX (END)
You’re not sure you have the time to run, and the creatures just keeps shuffling closer while you deliberate. By the time you’ve made your choice, there’s no more escape path so it is just as well that you have decided to stay just where you are.
Your heart is beating at a gallop now, and you hold yourself ever so still. But the creature just keeps shuffling forward until you are almost nose to nose.
You aren’t even breathing now, but still a small part of you hopes that you will escape this unscathed. You can barely see the creature under its mountain of packs so maybe it can’t see you either.
You have never been more wrong as a wiry hand snakes out and catches your wrist in its tight, bony grip.
“Help me with these bags, will you?”
The voice is raspy but identifiable as female.
You make an attempt at tugging your arm back, but the woman’s grip is vice-like. You see no other choice but to do as the lady asks.
You allow her to pull you out of the shadows and into the light where she gives you a once over. Or, at least, you think she does. It’s still difficult to see her under everything. She seems to nod and then a pack slides off of her back, falling onto the floor with a soft thud.
“Go ahead then. Help me out,” she says, releasing your wrist to gesture at the pack.
You give one last thought to running before realizing there’s no chance for that now. She’d just catch you again. You don’t know why you know this to be true, but it resounds in your head, clear as a bell, as irrefutable.
So you bend down to pick up the pack, placing it over your own smaller bag on your back. You stand up straighter but find that it is impossible. It feels like the weight of the world has fallen on your shoulders. You crane your neck upwards to look at the woman and find that she has vanished. And the weight on your shoulders is every bag she had been carrying.
Then, as though you have no control over your own body, you begin shuffling in the same direction she had once been heading, lugging all those rejected icons along with you to destinations unknown.
