Your stomach tramples over your better judgement to get at the food, and even with your misgivings, you tuck into the steaming plate you’re holding with relish. The food melts in your mouth, and you groan with satisfaction. It’s the best food you’ve ever eaten.
“Feel better?”
You nod happily and keep shovelling food in your mouth like this is your last meal.
The fairy keeps fluttering around your head as you eat, and your eyes track her movement while you chew.
“Why d’you want to help me?” Your mouth is full of food so you’re not sure if she can even understand you, but you can’t stop eating long enough to answer her.
She stops flitting, and hovers in the air right in front of your nose again.
“I have need of an icon maker,” she says.
You lick the last crumbs off your plate, and that’s when you feel it. Your body is shifting as you stand there. You look at the fairy in alarm, but she seems expectant as though she had been counting on this to occur.
“What have you done?”
You sentence trails off into a high pitched squeak as, all at once, you shrink down with a little pop to fairy size, equipped with wings and all. Not used to wings, you fall to the ground and are overcome with how big your world suddenly is. Everything is ginormous. Sticks look like tall trees, and you glance nervously at the leaves because you could get lost under one of those now.
Your fairy companion--you hesitate to call her friend since she’s obviously tricked you--settles on the ground beside you.
“I’m not particularly sorry about deceiving you. Fairies don’t apologize very often. And I do need your assistance. All the fairies do,” she says, reaching for your hand. You let her take it. Her hands are warm, dry, and strangely comforting all things considered.
“What do you need my help for?”
She twists her lips, and after a pause, she answers you. “We don’t need you specifically. We just need someone to teach us. We want to make icons too.”
With your hands in hers, she coaxes you up into the air, holding you tight until you get the hang of your new wings. It doesn’t take long. It’s as if you’ve had them forever.
And then, she tells you in a whisper with her mouth pressed against your ear, you’re off to the fairy kingdom.
