there's a band called califone playing tonight. i hadn't heard of them before, but i'm listening to them now and they sound pretty good.
they've apparently used a "prepared metallophone" in concert, which they explain like so:

i like califone, despite not really having heard very much of them. and the metalliphone sounds cool.

they didn't have it at this show, although he seemed to have attached some kind of metal bars to the cowbell.

they're really interesting and talented, but i think i'd enjoy them more as background music than as a headlining band. i actually left before their set was done (it was also ridiculously hot in the venue).
